urination and rapid or irregular heartbeat. Though many people
experience these symptoms they may experience all of the
symptoms at all times and may attribute the symptoms to another

There are many risk factors for high blood pressure. Be sure you
know your family history and risk factors so you can make
informed choices when it comes to your healthcare. Some of the
risk factors are: AGE: your risk increases with age. RACE: High
blood pressure occurs likewise frequently in blacks than any other
racial group SEX: High blood pressure is extra common in men than
women before the age of 60. However after the age of 60 the
reverse is true. FAMILY HISTORY: Some families have a history of
high blood pressure OBSEITY: The greater body mass you have the

tissues. INACTIVITY: Lack of physical activity increases your
risk. TOBACCO USE: Nicotine constricts your blood vessels and
forces your heart to work harder. SODIUM: People who are sodium

using sodium. LOW POTASSIUM: If you don’t consume or retain
enough potassium, you can accumulate too much sodium, which
raises the blood pressure. EXCESSIVE ALCOHOL: Over time heavy
drinking can damage your heart muscle, which can lead to high
blood pressure and other complications. STRESS: High levels of
stress can lead to temporary increases in blood pressure.

Excessive high blood pressure can lead to a stroke. A stroke
occurs when a blood vessel, which supplies blood to the brain,
bursts or is blocked by a blood clot. Within minutes the nerve
cells in that area of the brain are damaged, and they die within
a few hours. As a result, the part of the body controlled by the
damaged section of the brain cannot function properly. Before
having a stroke you may have one or farther transient ischemic
attacks (TIAs), which are a warning signal that a stroke may
soon occur.

The symptoms of a stroke can be any or all of the following:
Numbness, weakness, or paralysis or the face, arm, or leg,
especially on one side of the body. Vision problems in one or
both eyes, double vision, or loss of vision. Confusion, trouble
speaking or understanding with trouble walking, dizziness, loss
of balance or coordination, and a severe headache.

Remember to monitor your blood pressure, and to speak to your
doctor if you have any of the symptoms mentioned above. If you
have a history of high blood pressure be pro-active and take

about 20 minutes and is painless, providing accuracy within a 2%
error margin. Many insurance companies will cover the cost of
DEXA but if not, you can have the scan performed for around

With Hydrostatic Weighing, the body is weighed underwater. The
test consists of sitting on a scale underneath water while
blowing out as much air from your lungs as possible. Then when
dunked below the water’s surface, you would blow out even fresh
air. Because fat does not weigh as much as water, the greater fat a
person’s body has, the increased they will float. Therefore,
Hydrostatic Weighing works by measuring underwater weight so
that body density can be determined.

On the other hand, if you want to have the option of determining
your fat-to-muscle ratio on your own and every day if you like,
you can simply purchase a caliper from drug stores, health
equipment stores, and even on the internet. Just remember that
if you are interested in losing weight, instead of depending on
the bathroom scale, it is important that you worry likewise about
the excess fat being carried. While a standard scale will tell
you if you are losing weight from diet and exercise, a scale
will not tell if you are losing the body’s muscle or fat.

a level of control to your future. The problem is that the

of sunlight can have very negative, far-reaching consequences on
your health as well. In recent years numerous well-respected
studies, such as one carried out by the University of Maine,
have shown that lack of sunlight may in fact be the cause of, or
a large contributing factor behind, some people’s high blood
pressure.

Probably the most well-known health problem that can stem from a
severe lack of sunlight is vitamin D deficiency, often seen in
the form of rickets. This condition occurs because the human
body produces its vitamin D through sunlight expose (it can also
be obtained through artificial ultra violet light, supplements
and some foods). Much like trees and greenery, humans need
vitamin D to thrive and develop properly. We have millions upon
millions of red corpuscles that flow continually through the
blood vessels in every part of our skin. Tucked away beneath
these vessels are little oil glands that are called sterols.
When sterols are exposed to sunlight a substance inside of them
is changed and it turns into vitamin D. This vitamin D is in
turn carried to every part of your body, including your heart,
kidneys and blood.

With the help of vitamin D your kidneys are able to create a
hormone called rennin. This useful hormone is an important
helper when it comes to regulating blood pressure. In the liver
it helps to produce a substance called calcidiol, which in turn
creates calcitriol. This substance helps to control your
metabolism’s calcium levels. This is a very imperative function
as the effects of this transformation stem as far as lowering
your risk of certain diseases and managing things like your
insulin levels and autoimmune system. In fact low levels of
vitamin D have been linked to many conditions including SAD,
osteoporosis, osteomalacia, hypoparathyroidism, colon cancer,
MS, and even diabetes, so it should come as no surprise that it
can also be a contributing actor behind high blood pressure.

For over fifty years scientists and physicians have been aware
of the reality that exposure to ultraviolet light (which can be
obtained from sunlight or through manmade lights) can lower
blood pressure in people who have “average” blood pressure
levels, and significantly lower levels in those with high blood
pressure.

Does this mean that if you have high blood pressure you should
spend hours a day completely exposed to the sun? No, but larger
and major researchers are finding that even small doses of
sunlight (which can be taken in while wearing sunscreen) are
good for you. It has even been put forth that sunlight through
your eyes can help with vitamin D problems too. In this modern
world of continual “indoor-ism” and hectic schedules it can be
hard to find time or ways to get enough vitamin D. Supplements
are one answer, artificial ultraviolet light another (this route
is often used to treat SAD), and natural sunlight in reasonable
amounts in another. But with all the potential good that a
little sunlight now and than can do for you one can’t help but
wonder if it’s time to take a walk on the sunny side of the
street. Who knows, your blood pressure may thank you for it.
